This is how the garden site looked on 29 March 1999, after the snowiest winter in 50 years.

I had to build a wildlife fence around the garden, since the surrounding forest is full of moose, deer and hares. The fence is almost 7 feet tall.

We dug a small pond, lined it with a rubber pond liner and had the volunteer fire department fill it with water. Around the pond, we established two concentric perennial beds.

By the end of June, the vegetable garden was thriving in the hot weather. The greenhouse is screened with a sheet to keep the temperature down.

The tomatoes, corn and beans gave a bumper crop in 1999 thanks to the hottest summer in 50 years.
